1. Introduction
Over the past few decades, the rapid development of digital technology has not only fundamentally changed our way of life but has also profoundly impacted various fields of artistic creation, especially the music industry. Modern music production, as an important part of this transformation, has ushered in a new era of music creation, editing, and mixing through the comprehensive application of audio technology, MIDI technology, and Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs). Globally, modern music production has become a key driving force in the development of the music industry, and Macau, a unique crossroad of Eastern and Western cultures, is no exception. Although the field of modern music production in Macau is relatively new, its potential is enormous, especially in promoting musical style innovation and the economic development of the music industry.
However, despite the increasing significance of modern music production, systematic research on its current application status in Macau is relatively scarce. This limits our comprehensive understanding of its developmental opportunities and challenges. This paper aims to explore the application of modern music production in Macau, analyzing its current status in terms of technology application, education and training, and industry development, as well as its challenges and opportunities, thereby providing theoretical and practical references for the development of the music industry in Macau and globally.
2. Modern Music Production
The core concept of "Modern Music Production" involves the integrated use of audio technology, MIDI technology, and "Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs)" to create, edit, and mix audio materials. Although this concept is somewhat unfamiliar within Macau's musical culture, it holds tremendous potential in the music industry, a point that has been emphasized by some scholars in previous research. The use of computer technology in music visualization can support a variety of courses in music education, such as music theory, sight-singing and ear training, vocal music, music conducting, and music appreciation, aiming for a more intuitive and visual learning approach to help students better understand and master musical knowledge and skills [1].
Multimedia music production systems play a significant role in the field of music creation, offering new methods and conveniences. Through the combination of digital audio and MIDI technology, music producers can record, edit, and play audio data in real time, freely adjusting parameters like timbre, volume balance, and sound layering. The application of these systems enables instant and intelligent music production, maximizing individuals' creative potential [2].
Computer music production technology brings opportunities for innovation and development in the music field, allowing music creators to break through the limitations of traditional musical instrument performance and integrate creation, performance, and production; in music education, it optimizes the teaching structure, realizes the concretization of music theory knowledge, and the synchronization of hearing and vision, aiding learners in better understanding and mastering; in music performance and entertainment, it can improve the efficiency of music dissemination and reduce costs [3].
3. Music Education in Macau
The music education industry in Macau mainly includes school music education and community music education [4][5]. In terms of school music education, Macau has public and private primary and secondary schools, colleges, and special schools, which offer a certain proportion of music courses, covering singing games, basic music theory, percussion, choir, etc. However, the quality of music education varies. Additionally, public universities and private amateur music colleges also offer music education courses and training [4][5].
In terms of community music education, Macau has several community music education institutions, such as the St. Pius X Music Academy, the Ricci School Piano Department, and the Macau Performing Arts Academy Music School, which have contributed to the training of local musical talents. Moreover, the grading system of the Royal Academy of Music in the UK has a certain influence in Macau, and its content and requirements are used as standard norms for music learning [4][5].
4. The Modern Music Production Industry in Macau
The modern music production industry is a complex field that can be traced back to the premise of "generating digital music products of unlimited styles using modern music production technology." While styles are unlimited, mainstream music in today's market generally employs modern music production. Through in-depth analysis of the literature, it is known that the composition of Macau's modern music production industry includes the following:
Youth music groups [6]. Youth musicians may include independent musicians or those signed with talent agencies. Since their musical works can be promoted online and generate certain revenues [6], it can be confirmed that they all use modern music production technology and are part of the modern music production industry.
Professional music production companies or studios. Music companies and studios are often the main forces in the modern music production industry, both worldwide and in Macau. The well-known "Chessman Music Industry" is a typical representative, capable of completing all related businesses from creation to distribution to marketing and promotion, having cooperated with Macau's government, enterprises, and universities [7].
The official website of the Macau Chinese Orchestra shows that the Chinese Orchestra has issued CDs in conjunction with the Macau Cultural Bureau [8], most likely using modern music production technology, but this type of infrequent, one-off behavior is judged not to belong to Macau's modern music production industry.
Given the emphasis on music education in Macau, the possibility of modern music production technology being applied in Macau's music education methods is considered, which requires further research.
Considering the operating models of Chinese and Western orchestras, they might employ modern music production technology when arranging details for ensemble pieces, that is, using virtual instruments in DAW software for orchestration, significantly improving rehearsal efficiency and conducting efficiency at minimal cost; however, they might also use the most primitive methods, such as writing staff notation. Additionally, during live performances, Chinese and Western orchestras undoubtedly utilize technology like mixing consoles, monitoring equipment, microphones, and sound systems, all of which belong to the realm of modern music production. However, these two considered modes of modern music production application are not dominant within Chinese and Western orchestras, occupy a very small proportion, and are extremely cumbersome and difficult to investigate unless conducted through official, large-scale surveys, and thus are not included in the research subjects.
5. Challenges and Opportunities
5.1Challenges
Rapid technological updates: The rapid development of music production technology requires practitioners to continuously learn and update their knowledge, which may pose challenges for those with limited resources or who are not adept at adapting to new technologies.
Shortage of professional talent: Although Macau emphasizes music education, there may be a lack of training in advanced music production skills, limiting the development of the music industry.
Intense market competition: With the integration of the global music market, Macau's music producers and companies face competition from international giants, necessitating an enhancement of their innovation capabilities and market sensitivity.
The double-edged sword of cultural identity: Macau's multicultural background provides rich material for music creation but may also bring conflicts and challenges in cultural identity, especially when seeking international market recognition.
5.2Opportunities
Firstly, “technological innovation”. The application of modern music production technology provides a broader platform and tools for music creation and performance, enabling musicians to create unique music styles and works.
Secondly, “cultural diversity”. As a melting pot of multiple cultures, Macau offers unique cultural elements and inspiration for music creation, helping to produce music works with international appeal.
Thirdly, “international exchange platform”. Macau's international status provides opportunities for its music industry to interact and cooperate with musicians worldwide, helping to enhance Macau's international influence in music.
Fourthly, “policy support”. The Macau government's attention and investment in the cultural industry provide policy and financial support for the development of the music industry, promoting the healthy development of music education and the music industry.
